Course Description

This course will focus on the liturgical relationship shared between deacons and their priests, specifically within the context of Sunday morning worship. While books have been written on the liturgical ministry of deacons and separate volumes devoted to the liturgical ministry of priests, very few resources exist describing the importance of their relationship together while serving at the altar. The primary goal of this course is to prepare future deacons for their liturgical ministry so that no one falters at the altar.

The most important thing for a cleric to do while celebrating the liturgy is to pay attention to her or his surroundings. In addition to one’s own responsibilities, the liturgical “dance” shared by priest and deacon requires trust, respect, and a thorough understanding of what the other person is supposed to be doing. Too many liturgies have been interrupted by a miscommunication or complete lack of communication between the celebrant and the deacon…and it is entirely possible for the celebrant to be the guilty party!
